New opportunities and diversity in the sailing world
The Scaramouche Sailing Trust was set up to enable students from inner city London to thrive through sailing. It is also bringing more diversity into the sailing world.
The charity rarely talks about the background of the students, many of whom are from BAME backgrounds.
“We are providing opportunities that these inner-city students wouldn’t otherwise get,” comments Jon Holt, Founder of the Trust. “We do not dwell on our backgrounds. But you just have to look around the marina and we stand out in the crowd.”
Events around the world have highlighted the urgent need to create more opportunities for people from BAME backgrounds. As Chris Grant from Sport England has said, this is a huge issue in the world of sport. And it’s true for sailing too.
“We have been welcomed into the world of sailing, with incredible support from the sailing industry and Sport England, without which we wouldn’t be where we are today,” continues Jon.
“Smashing all expectations, our students were the comprehensive first state school to complete the Rolex Fastnet Race. They are unstoppable. And our helm, Montel Fagan-Jordan, won the Yachting Journalist Association Young Sailor of the Year.”
The Trust knows that what they have achieved so far is just the start. There is much more to do, to tackle structural inequalities and help people from all backgrounds use sailing to fulfil their potential.
Now the Trust has shown what’s possible, they are planning for growth. They would love to hear from others who would like to get involved.

So good to read this article. Its the essence of why I love this organisation so much and watch with great anticipation, appreciation and expectation the young peoples journeys … it’s so inspiring and good to know the sailing community embrace and support you all!! This is the stuff that gives me hope for a better future when the full diversity of the human race is fully present and represented in all sports and sporting clubs, events etc. Keep chasing your dreams, pushing out the glass ceilings and make the way for generations to follow … god bless you all!!
