Our Team

Our Board of Trustees works closely with a small staff team to ensure the smooth running of the charity. 

Experienced, dedicated, and committed to delivering our mission

Lucy has a professional background in people management and has spent most of her career in international aid charities, as well as sales and marketing in small businesses closer to home.

She grew up sailing dinghies on the Beaulieu River and continues to race (not regularly enough!) out of Lymington.

Alex’s day job is Director of the Joffe Trust, a grant-making foundation.

Alex brings 25 years experience of working in charities at all levels. He set up and led the award winning charity Mango and was Director of Programme Quality for Plan International, one of the largest aid agencies. He has a wide range of board experience and originally qualified as an accountant.

Alex is a life long dinghy sailor and a member of Scaling Dam Sailing and Watersports Club, as well as Yarmouth Sailing Club.

Jon is Head of Sixth Form and Outdoor Education Lead at Greig City Academy, and he founded the school sailing programme in 2014.

He has a passion for sailing and the life lessons it can offer students. Jon is never far away from Greig City Academy, Cowes or boats. Jon is the driving force behind the project.

He was YJA MS Amlin International Sailor of the Decade 2020.

Montel started sailing as a student at Greig City Academy. He graduated with an Honours Degree in Digital Marketing from the University of Portsmouth in 2019.

Hailing from Tottenham, Montel was awarded the title of YJA Young Sailor of the Year in 2018. He first came to public attention when as Crew Captain the GCA completed the 605-mile Fastnet Race in 2017.

With a passion for offshore sailing, he currently combines working full time in Sales and Marketing with instructing and mentoring the younger GCA students, as well racing competitively.

Elspeth is CEO of Lighthouse, Poole, the UK’s largest regional Arts Centre.

Elspeth’s career has been primarily within nationally important landmark arts venues, including English National Opera, the Royal Festival Hall, and the Southbank Centre. She began her career however in community arts in the London Borough of Lambeth, ensuring that diverse communities were able to access a wide range of arts activities. She is passionate about ensuring that young people have access to cultural activities.

She is now an enthusiastic sailor, having taken up the sport when moving to Poole and turning 50.

Vim Phiri is a qualified accountant and senior financial services professional with 25+ years’ experience. She has extensive leadership experience, cofounded a community interest company and has held various roles including Governor in local schools.

With no sailing background and hailing from land-locked Zimbabwe, Vim is excited to take up a new challenge in an unfamiliar sport for good and bring her expertise into the Scaramouche community.

Peter Binning is a solicitor and was a founding partner of Corker Binning, a London law firm where he is now a consultant. As well as his experience of law firm management, he is a former Chair of the law reform charity JUSTICE and a trustee of Cobnor Activities Centre in West Sussex.

Peter is an RYA dinghy instructor and also has extensive experience of offshore sailing.

James is a retired commercial barrister who has been based in Bucklers Hard for more than 40 years.

He is a keen sailor and classic yacht owner, and was a Cowes Harbour commissioner between 2018-2024.

Early exposure to the work of the Shaftesbury Homes (now Shaftesbury Young People) seeded a strong belief in the power of sail training to provide opportunities to young people, regardless of background.
