With the summer coming to a close and the new school term starting, we reflect on what has been achieved by the sailing programme. GCA students have been making waves throughout the year – from mastering the basics, to gaining RYA qualifications, to exploring careers in the marine industry and competing at national level competitions in dinghies and keelboats. The stats speak volumes about the commitment they have made with dedicated support from teachers, coaches, staff, volunteers, supporters and each other. Together the programme has seen:
- 406 students sailing (that’s nearly 40% of the school)
- over 9,000 hours on the water
- more than 2,250 individual sailing days,
Sixth former and Etchells bowman, Felipe shares this year’s personal highlights:
– Being part of the winning team at the Etchells Southern Area Championships & Etchells Bedrock series
– Experiencing flying the kite on a Cape31 alongside 2 Olympians & professional sailors
– Meeting Sir Ben Ainslie and heroes of Emirates GB team in London and the Tech Tour in Portsmouth
